THE WINDSOR AND ETON SOCIETY
Incorporating Windsor Heritage
NEWSLETTER No 110 August 2025
NOTE FROM OUR VICE-CHAIR
I do hope that you have all been enjoying the sunshine and are managing to keep your gardens watered !
I am writing the Newsletter introduction on this occasion because our Chair, Margaret Lenton is sadly unexpectedly in hospital at present. I am pleased to report that she is making a good recovery following an operation but is likely to be out of action for some weeks. I know that we all wish her well and hope for her very speedy recovery.
The work of The Society continues with Theresa Haggart leading us monthly with reviews of all local planning issues. Alison Logan has run some excellent gardening sessions in our prominent adopted areas, but the challenge of watering to keep the planting alive is a real challenge.
The Society is undertaking the refurbishment of the historic plaque of the Charles 1 Execution Warrant positioned in the cobbled street close to the Crooked House. The plaque is currently is a very poor state. We are having this important piece of local history professionally restored.
Lastly we are planning our Annual Dinner in The Castle Hotel in Windsor on Wednesday September 3rd. This should be a lovely evening and we have a great speaker, Barbara Askew, who will be talking, appropriately, about Charles I in Windsor. The dinner is open to all members, friends and guests and details are available later in this Newsletter.
AGM 2025
WEDNESDAY 29TH OCTOBER – 7PM
THE OLD COURT
The Society’s AGM will be held at The Old Court, St Leonard’s Road, Windsor on Wednesday 29th October at 7pm. After the business part of the meeting there will be a speaker, yet to be confirmed, followed by the usual light refreshments and an opportunity to socialise with other members. The Agenda and further details will be included with the Annual Report which you will receive in September, but please put this date in your diary now. The Trustees look forward to welcoming you to the meeting and hearing your views on The Society’s activities and plans.
ANNUAL DINNER 2025
Tickets for our Annual Dinner have been in demand and at the time of writing there are only a few remaining. Owing to Margaret’s unexpected absence at the “helm” of all arrangements, committee members have been working together to ensure that everything is in place for an enjoyable and successful evening. Anyone wishing to enquire about ticket availability should contact our Membership Secretary Katie Broady – contact details are at the bottom of this newsletter.
HERITAGE & ENVIRONMENT
Quarterly Meeting
The Quarterly Meeting with officers from RBWM in June was postponed and, as yet, there is no new date. We asked for an update on the items we had raised at the last meeting some of which were still unanswered.
Windsor Town Team
The Town Team was out again in the town prior to the State Visit tidying the area near Riverside station. There had also been a working party in Alexandra Gardens and Bachelors Acre. These are often more litter picking than gardening as these areas have a constant litter problem.
Windsor Forum
We continue to attend the Windsor Forum to ensure that we are aware of things that people are interested in around the town and to raise issues that affect residents. The main issue for the July meeting was the new bus routes, which have been re-routed in the new timetables. The meetings are open to all residents and the next one is at York House at 6.30pm on 1st October.
Committee Meetings
The Heritage and Environment Committee continue to note and respond to matters that are important to maintain the historic buildings in the Conservation Areas of the town. We also try to ensure that all planning applications are scrutinised and commented on as and when necessary. There have been far fewer applications submitted to the Borough over the last few months and therefore fewer to discuss.

Letters written after the April meeting
Alexandra Gardens, Barry Avenue, Windsor, SL4 5JA – construction of an ice rink and attractions from November 2025 to January 2026 (PA 25/00537/FULL)
The plans were inspected and concerns raised over the lack of plans for protecting tree roots as rides were to be placed on top of some. The enhancement of biodiversity was just lip-service as they were destroyed each year. It was agreed to write and include photos in order to protect the trees.
Withdrawn before the Development Panel could decide the outcome

Windsor Yards re-development – (PA 22/02893/FULL)
This application was discussed again in the light of the recent photographs taken, the developer’s response and additional papers submitted. Windsor Yards re-development – (PA 22/02893/FULL)
These plans had just been submitted but it was agreed that a response from The Society was required. Letter sent regarding the additional two floors on the hotel. There were further changes to the plans following our letter and one storey was removed from the top of the hotel.

OUTINGS
On 9th July, nineteen members enjoyed a guided tour of Runnymede Air Forces Memorial at Englefield Green. Many of the group had been there at some time but not escorted by a Commonwealth War Graves Commission guide. We all learned new and interesting details about those commemorated and the site.
On Wednesday, 27th August, a group will be visiting Lancing College Chapel and St Mary’s House, Bramber for our summer outing.
(Report from Anne Taylor)
GARDENING PROJECTS
The gardening team gave the Heritage Garden another tidy up on 23rd June and left everything looking beautifully neat. The continuing problem with waste being left in the garden and the adjoining pavement is distressing, and despite this being reported to the Borough on a regular basis, no long-term solution has yet been found. A session in the Charles Knight Garden was also being planned but unfortunately an invasive weed has run rampant in the main shrub border, and it turns out to have toxic sap. Not wanting to put our volunteers at risk of harm, we have put off our work there and have asked the Borough to remove the weeds
TALKS
Due to our Annual Dinner taking place on the first Wednesday in September our Talks Season for 2025-26 will commence in October.
Thursday 9th October – 3pm – The Old Court
Talk by Jack Rankin, MP for Windsor
Thursday 6th November – 3pm – The Old Court
Dr Ed Newell (formerly of Cumberland Lodge) will talk on his book “Herne the Hunter – ghost, demon or god?”
The full programme for this season accompanies this newsletter and more detail on each talk is published on The Society’s website.
RESTORATION OF REPLICA KING CHARLES I EXECUTION WARRANT
Some time ago The Society agreed to restore this plaque, which has been a feature of Church Street for decades and is now in a very sorry state, with the lettering almost illegible and the surround faded and worn. It has taken a while to secure all the necessary approvals but early on the morning of Thursday 17th July we were finally able to take the plaque down. Thankfully this was easily accomplished and the plaque is now safely with the restorers at Manley Gallery who will be starting work on it soon. The restoration is likely to take several months but when it is returned to its position it should be fit to intrigue passers-by for many more decades.
