OUTINGS

Report on the outing to Beaulieu – June 11th 2024
Twenty-six members enjoyed a day at Beaulieu in June. The weather was kind and with both the Palace House and Motor Museum to visit as well as another small museum and extensive gardens there was plenty to occupy our time there.

Outing to Stratfield Saye – September 4th 2024
Forty members are looking forward to visiting Stratfield Saye, home of the Duke of Wellington, in September. A cancellation provided us with a late opportunity to go there and demand has been such that all places are filled and there is a short waiting list.
I would remind members that we need somebody to take over responsibility for organising these outings. Please contact me if you are interested.

GARDENING PROJECTS
The Gardening Group met twice in June to tidy up in the Charles Knight and Heritage Gardens and since then minor maintenance and occasional watering has been undertaken. Even in this relatively wet summer the newly planted Remembrance Garden has struggled a bit to thrive, although the pansies we planted have continued to give a good show and many are still flowering well. Unfortunately one of the large mahonias was stolen and another shrub damaged. The mahonia has been replaced but other new planting to fill in gaps will be left until the autumn when there is a better chance that the plants will settle in successfully.
The photograph of the little garden in River Street (left) shows that once shrubs become established they can really take off. These were put in in 2022 and now pretty well look after themselves. The begonias we put in to cheer up the area by the new bench in the Heritage Garden (right) are also doing well and the Garden is still a popular spot with both residents and visitors.

HERITAGE & ENVIRONMENT

After many months of trying to get the Officers from RBWM to meet with members of the committee, we have finally set a date for the beginning of September for the first quarterly meeting. We hope to discuss many of the matters that we have had concerns about for many months. These include The Vision for
Windsor, planning application issues, the voluntary work that The Windsor and Eton Society complete, rodent issues, how the Society can help other groups around the town and conservation issues.
The Heritage and Environment Committee continue to note and respond to matters that are important in maintaining the historic buildings in the Conservation Areas of the town. We also try to ensure that all planning applications are scrutinised and commented on as and when necessary.

The Committee meets once a month to discuss the planning applications and related policy developments. We have been very fortunate to have members who have a vast knowledge of planning rules, laws, and policies, however if you feel you can contribute to protecting the historical aspects of Windsor and Eton as well as shaping its future, please contact me to find out more about how we work and about possibly joining the Committee. Specific expertise is not as essential as a keen interest in safeguarding our historic towns and new members would be supported into the role.

The town centre shops continue to change tenants and therefore there are a number of changes to shop fronts and advertising signs to monitor. More and more applications submitted are for illuminated signs in the Conservation Area which we resist if they do not meet RBWM policies.

In planning applications that involve the felling of a tree the committee continue to write a standard letter requesting a replacement tree is planted to ensure the renewal and improvement of the biodiversity and greenery of the towns. We have seen that this clause to replant is now in most of these permitted applications.

We continue to object to applications that remove all the greenery in front gardens to allow for large areas of concrete or block paving for parking. This is to try to encourage people to leave at least some area for planting to allow water to have somewhere to soak into, to avoid it causing flooding when it rains heavily. Many people are applying to convert garages into habitable accommodation and therefore needing more of the front garden to be put to parking. Some roads of the town now have little or no greenery at all, as cars replace plants in front gardens.

MEMBERSHIP
It has been a quiet couple of months but we are pleased to welcome:   Lt. Col. Charles Webb and Mrs Webb  and  Mr & Mrs M Gent
Several people have expressed interest in joining The Society following news of the forthcoming outing to Stratfield Saye, and our new series of Old Court talks starting on 10th October is also a popular time for people to come along, often as guests, and decide to take up membership. We are always happy for members to bring their friends.
As we approach the Autumn, I have a question! If you don’t have a Standing Order for membership (due on 1st October) do you think you’ll remember at the end of September to send me a cheque? I am making my usual request to those who don’t have a Standing Order to set one up at their Bank. It is so much easier than cheques and will save you postage and being chased by me for money! Call or email me, Katie Broady, for a form (details at the bottom of this newsletter), or you can find one on our website.
Hoping that the rest of the summer is a pleasant and healthy one for all our members.

WEBSITE & ZOOM
Whilst the Covid lockdown has thankfully receded we are still enjoying the pleasure of The Society’s evening talks being whooshed into our homes via the technology of ZOOM. Zoom is a medium which works particularly well where the presenter has a great number of photographic images to support the talk, and over the last twelve months we have had Fiona Rose telling us about the homes of William Morris, Dr Susan Kay-Williams taking us behind the scenes of the Royal School of Needlework and Alan Clare a fascinating look at the Highlands and Islands of the Air-Ambulance.
Our Website https://wesoc.org.uk provides up to date information on our activities and forthcoming talks, visits and future events, but you can also follow the outstanding work undertaken by our Heritage and Environment team who monitor ongoing Planning Applications in our community, and challenge the RBWM planners to protect our heritage. Copies of the Newsletter from November 2017 to the present are readily available online, together with details of the Trustees and their responsibilities. If you wish to contribute to the website, please contact Malcolm Leach at admin@wesoc.org.uk
